Tales from the Indian Countryside: Women in Panchayats (1999)

Client / Financial Support: Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India
Duration: 29 mts

In 1993 as part of a larger attempt to increase the participation of women in public life, the Government of India passed the 73rd amendment to the Indian constitution, the Panchayati Raj Act. According to this act, one third of all political posts/positions at the village level are now reserved for women. `Tales from the Indian Countryside’ provides a first-hand glimpse into the benefits that have accrued from this legislation.

The film travels to five different states in the country – Kerala, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh – recounting the experiences of women that have been elected sarpanches, or heads of the village councils, in these very different parts of the country. Given the fact that India has traditionally been a male-dominated society, the presence of significant numbers of women in leadership roles is a new experience for Indian society.

Tales from the Indian Countryside is an exploration of the successes and difficulties that have accompanied this latest attempt by the Indian government to provide women with a growing set of opportunities by which they can participate in and contribute towards India’s progress into the 21st century.
